How the rankings work.

An independent, editorial benchmark of excellence in tattooing. 3 lists, 1 standard, no way to apply and no way to buy in. This page sets out why the rankings exist, what the inspectors look for, how each list is made and when it is published.

A mark of excellence for an art form that has earned one.

Tattooing has become one of the most demanding visual arts practised anywhere, and until 2025 it had no benchmark.

The world's finest chefs have the Michelin Guide. Architects have the Pritzker Prize. Tattoo artists, whose work is carried on the body for life and whose best practitioners now hang in galleries and museums, had no independent measure of their standing at all. Recognition ran on follower counts, convention trophies and word of mouth. Followers measure reach. A convention award measures 1 piece on 1 day. Nothing measured a body of work over a year against a published standard.

SKINGRAPHICA® makes the finest skincare in the world for tattooed skin. Our products exist to protect the art. It made sense to recognise the people who create it, to the same standard we hold ourselves to. So we established the Global Artist Rankings as an annual, editorial record of mastery, judged on the work alone.

Nothing about the rankings is for sale. There is no entry, no fee, no application and no commercial relationship that can move a name onto a list or off one. Whether an artist works with SKINGRAPHICA® has no bearing on the assessment. The work is judged on its own.

0fees, applications or nominationsThe inspectors find the work. Nobody can put an artist forward, and nobody can pay.
6published criteria for every listThe same 6 decide the Top 10 and the Top 100. NOVA has 6 of its own.

3 lists. 1 standard.

Every list is alphabetical. SKINGRAPHICA® never publishes a number 1 or a number 100. Within a list, artists are recognised as peers.

10 artists whose mastery is beyond dispute, chosen from the Top 100 of the year before. The highest distinction SKINGRAPHICA® confers on an artist, and the hardest to hold. Each receives a full inspector's report.

GRAPHICA

The global elite.

The 100 artists who make up the world's elite, drawn from every style and every continent and judged on the same 6 criteria as Black Ivy. To hold GRAPHICA is to stand among the 100 most accomplished artists working anywhere, from a global field in the hundreds of thousands. Each receives an inspector's citation and a profile.

NOVA

The next generation of leading artists.

20 emerging artists whose work is technically undeniable and whose trajectory points at the global elite. NOVA is Latin for new star. It is not a developmental award. It is recognition that development is inevitable.

Recognition for studios

The rankings recognise individual artists. Signature Studio recognises the studio around them, the standard of client care, the culture among its artists and a reputation built over years. It is a separate programme with its own 6 criteria. Read about Signature Studio

What the inspectors look for.

The same 6 criteria decide the Top 10 and the Top 100. They are not scored and not weighted. The inspectors assess the whole, and a weakness in 1 area is rarely offset by brilliance in another.

01Mastery and technical ability

Precision of line, shading, colour saturation and composition. Consistency of execution across varied projects, placements and skin types. Evidence of control, discipline and refined craftsmanship, and of work that is built to age.

02Artistic vision and style

Originality and creativity in approach. Depth of perspective beyond replication or trend. A recognisable and enduring style that is the artist's own and could not be mistaken for anyone else's.

03Innovation and pioneering

New techniques, tools or approaches brought to tattooing. Boundaries pushed on what tattoo art can achieve. Visible influence on other artists through that innovation, not through imitation of it.

04Reputation and peer respect

Esteem within the professional community. Recognition through collaboration, features, exhibitions or teaching. Demonstrated integrity and professionalism in practice.

05Industry impact and influence

Contribution to the evolution of tattooing as an art form. A role in shaping how the public sees tattoo culture. Mentorship of, and influence on, the next generation of artists.

06Consistency and longevity

Sustained excellence over time rather than a single celebrated piece. A body of work that demonstrates resilience, growth and maturity across a career.

What never counts

Followers, reach or press. A large audience is not evidence of mastery and a small one is not evidence against it.

Commercial relationships

Working with SKINGRAPHICA® or with any other brand, in any capacity, has no bearing on assessment. Neither does declining to.

Trophies on their own

Convention awards are noted as one signal of peer respect. They are not a shortcut, and an artist who never competes loses nothing.

Quotas

There are no quotas by country, city or style. The spread on each list is a result of the assessment, never a target for it.

What the inspectors look for in the Rising 20.

The same values as every SKINGRAPHICA® list, a different intent. The Global Rankings recognise mastery sustained over time. NOVA identifies emerging mastery that is already undeniable.

01Technical foundation

Fundamental needle control, line stability, saturation discipline, depth consistency and healing foresight. Shortcuts, reliance on filters and surface impact without structural integrity are excluded.

02Control under complexity

Composure when executing technically demanding work. Complexity must look intentional, not improvised. Calm execution under difficulty is a defining signal.

03Artistic intelligence

Compositional judgement, restraint, awareness of negative space and the quality of every decision. NOVA artists understand why something is done, not only how.

04Consistency of output

Repeatability rather than isolated highlights. The work must hold across clients, skin types, placements and appointments.

05Style innovation

The creation, reinterpretation or evolution of a visual style through original thinking. NOVA artists do not imitate trends. They develop a recognisable language that moves tattooing forward.

06Trajectory

NOVA is forward-looking. The inspectors assess whether the current work shows a clear path toward the elite global standard, not whether the artist has already arrived.

Who is eligible

Any artist not already named in the Global Top 10 or Global Top 100. There is no age limit and no limit on years in the craft.

What happens next

NOVA artists are assessed for the Global Rankings published the following November. In the first year, 6 of the 20 reached the Top 100 that November.

What NOVA is not

NOVA is not a popularity list and it cannot be bought. The same rules on fees, applications and commercial relationships apply.

Who assesses, and how.

The inspectors are a small panel. They are not named, and they do not announce themselves.

Anonymity keeps the assessment honest. If the inspectors were known, artists and studios would try to influence them. The co-founders of SKINGRAPHICA® review every shortlist and sign the final lists, and their signatures appear on the Certified block of every ranked artist's profile.

The inspectors assess the work, not the reputation. Healed results, large-scale projects, consistency across a year of output, and how a piece is likely to look in 10 years. Where it helps, we consult respected artists and industry experts, but final decisions rest solely with us.

There is no application and no nomination.

Artists cannot apply, agents cannot submit and we do not take suggestions from brands, sponsors or suppliers. The inspectors find the work. An artist is on a list because of the work and for no other reason.

Published facts can be corrected. Every profile carries a Request an update link, and every correction is verified by a reply to a direct message from SKINGRAPHICA® to the artist's own Instagram account before it is published. Names are not removed. Each list is an editorial record of a moment in time.

1

Discover

The inspectors search for the work across the year, in studios, at conventions and in the healed results that artists and their clients share.

2

Longlist

Artists whose work meets the standard are added to a longlist that builds from November to September. Being on it is never disclosed.

3

Assess

Each longlisted artist is assessed against the 6 criteria. The inspectors compare notes and consult artists and experts where it helps.

4

Decide

The final review closes on 1 October. The co-founders review every shortlist, settle each list and sign it.

5

Verify and publish

Every published fact, studio, city, styles and handles, is checked against the artist's own current profile. The lists go live on 1 November.

One year, 2 calendars.

The Global Rankings and NOVA share one assessment year and publish on different dates, so rising artists are identified before the lists that follow. Every title is held for 12 months and every list stays on the record.

What the lists tell us about the industry.

To produce 3 lists, the inspectors have to look at the whole field. That makes the lists a reliable picture of where the best tattooing is happening.

Each year we publish what they show. Which countries and cities field the most ranked artists, which styles are rising and which are settling, how many names are new, how artists move between NOVA, the Top 100 and the Top 10, and how the balance between Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania shifts from one year to the next.

The analysis is published alongside each list and is free to cite with attribution. It is built on an assessment of the work rather than on follower counts, and it becomes more useful each year as the record grows.

See this year's analysis

Published with the GRAPHICA Top 100 each 1 November. Country, city, style and movement figures for all 3 lists.

A measure immigration authorities can consider.

The best talent in any field should be able to work and travel freely. A published, independent standard makes that possible.

Chefs, athletes, musicians and scientists have long relied on recognised industry benchmarks when they apply to work abroad. Immigration authorities, including the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services for the O-1 visa, consider independent evidence of extraordinary ability. A ranking judged on published criteria by an independent body is that kind of evidence. Tattoo artists had nothing like it. The Global Artist Rankings were built, in part, to give them one.

Every ranked artist receives an official certificate. Where an artist in the Global Top 10 or Global Top 100 needs more for a visa or work permit application, SKINGRAPHICA® prepares formal documentation that sets out the ranking, the criteria and the assessment behind it. We have provided such letters to ranked artists for applications to the United States and other governments, and they have helped elite artists secure the right to work where their clients are. This documentation is provided for the Global Rankings only, not for the NOVA Rising 20.

Immigration decisions rest with the relevant authority. SKINGRAPHICA® provides documentation of a ranking, not immigration advice, and cannot guarantee any outcome.

Request visa documentation

For artists officially ranked in the Global Top 10 or Global Top 100, in any year. NOVA Rising 20 artists are not eligible until they are ranked. The request form is on the I'm a ranked artist page and every request is verified against the record.

A note from the co-founders

Every other art form celebrates its finest practitioners with a standard the world recognises. Tattooing never had one, and its best artists deserved it. The rankings are our answer. They are not perfect and they are not for sale. If your name is on a list, it is because your work put it there.

Common questions.

Are the lists ranked in order?

No. Every list is alphabetical by surname or nickname and the artists on it are recognised as peers. SKINGRAPHICA® does not publish a number 1 or a number 100.

Can an artist apply, or be nominated?

No. There is no application and no nomination. The inspectors find the work. Messages suggesting an artist are read and not acted on.

Can an artist pay to be included?

No. Inclusion cannot be bought, sponsored or influenced by product gifting or any commercial relationship with SKINGRAPHICA® or anyone else.

What period does a list cover?

Work made and shown between 1 November and the following 1 November. The Global Rankings publish on 1 November and NOVA is announced on 1 February.

How long is a title held?

12 months, from the day the list is published. Previous lists are archived and remain the record of their year. The live list pages always carry the current year.

Does an artist know they are being assessed?

No. The longlist is never disclosed and the inspectors do not announce themselves. An artist learns of a listing when the list is published.

Can an artist ask to be removed?

Names are not removed. The lists are an editorial record of a moment in time. Facts on a profile can be corrected through the Request an update link, and every correction is verified by direct message before it is published.

Can a ranking help with a work visa?

It can. An independent ranking against published criteria is the kind of evidence authorities such as the USCIS consider for the O-1 visa. Black Ivy and GRAPHICA artists can request documentation from the I'm a ranked artist page. NOVA artists cannot until they are ranked.

Can I republish the lists?

Yes. Each list is released under a Creative Commons BY-ND licence. Reproduce it in full, unaltered, credited as SKINGRAPHICA Global Artist Rankings with the year, and link to skingraphica.com.
