A tattoo sits beneath a living, constantly renewing layer of skin. For collectors with pieces 5 to 20 years old, it is easy to assume all the dullness comes from the ink. Some fading is real, as the body slowly clears pigment over the years. Part of what you see, though, is the surface above it, a window that has become clouded. LUME focuses on the clarity of that outer layer, the stratum corneum, to refresh the canvas without disturbing the ink below.

Why PHAs and Bakuchiol Suit Tattooed Skin

The guiding rule for caring for older tattoos is to refresh the surface gently. Aggressive anti-ageing treatments can irritate the skin, and irritation and inflammation are best avoided in tattooed skin.

LUME uses a blend of Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) and Bakuchiol. PHAs have a larger molecular structure than traditional acids such as glycolic acid, so they work gently at the surface of the skin. Bakuchiol is a plant-based ingredient often described as a gentle alternative to retinol. Together they help smooth skin texture and support the skin’s natural renewal at the surface.

Why Do Old Tattoos Look Dull?

How vivid a tattoo looks depends partly on how light travels through the skin. When the surface becomes dry, thickened and uneven over years of exposure, incoming light hits it and scatters. That scattering softens the visual sharpness of the tattoo, so deep blacks can read as washed-out greys and vibrant colours look muted.

By smoothing and hydrating the surface of older skin, LUME helps light pass more evenly through it and reflect more clearly off the pigment. This is the science behind the “pop”, a refreshed look with more apparent contrast, definition and brightness in older ink.

Should You Exfoliate an Old Tattoo?

A common idea in the tattoo community is to scrub old ink to brighten it. Harsh granular scrubs can cause tiny tears and irritation in the skin, and repeated irritation does a tattoo no favours. Put simply, gentle beats harsh.

A gentler approach is chemical exfoliation. Instead of scraping dead cells away, LUME helps loosen the desmosomes, the bonds that hold dull, dead cells to the surface, so they shed more evenly. This gentle exfoliation lifts the dulling veil and reveals the look of the art beneath.

Real-world use is the true test. We ran a consumer trial across Sydney, New York, Los Angeles and Ontario to see how the protocol performed in different climates and environments.

The trial covered a range of tattoo styles, from delicate fine-line blackwork to densely packed traditional colour pieces.
