The world in ink.
Where in the world is tattooing most a part of everyday life? The honest answer isn't the one that goes viral. On surveys you can fairly compare, North America, Australia and Scandinavia sit at the top, women have overtaken men almost everywhere, and the most tattooed age isn't 20. It's 40.
The most tattooed nations
The share of adults with at least 1 tattoo, from the best recent national survey in each country. The United States, Canada, Australia and Sweden sit together at about 1 in 3. Italy, so often called the most tattooed nation on earth, is at 1 in 8 on its own health institute's count.

The ranking everyone quotes
A 2018 online poll of 9,054 internet users in 18 countries produced the "Italy is the most tattooed nation" headline. It measured people who were online and opted in, which runs 2 to 4 times higher than national surveys, so it is shown here for rank order only.
◐ Dalia Research, April 2018, 18 countries, opt-in online panel. Share of internet users, not of adults.
The rise, country by country
How the share of tattooed adults has grown. The United States doubled in 20 years and has settled near a third since 2018. Australia added 11 points in 7 years, most of it during the pandemic. Britain adds about a point a year.

Women now lead
In every recent Western survey women outnumber men, and the gap is widest among the young. In Sweden it is 23 points at ages 20 to 29 and 1 point at 60 to 69. Russia is the holdout where men still lead.

Peak age is 40, not 20
The most tattooed Americans are aged 30 to 49. The cohort that got inked in the 2000s boom is now in its peak professional years, and surveys catch 18 to 24 year olds before the median first tattoo at 25.
● United States, Pew Research Center 2023. The same shape holds in Canada (Millennials 51%, Gen X 43%, Gen Z 35%, Boomers 17%) and Australia (Gen Y 42%, Gen Z 39%). ◐
Australia, state by state
Queensland is the most tattooed state in the country and Tasmania the least. 3 in 10 Australian adults now have a tattoo, up from 2 in 10 in 2018, and 35% of them have 5 or more.
◐ McCrindle national survey, July 2023. National series 19% (2016), 20% (2018), 25% (2020), 30% (2023).

Americans have a tattoo. Enough to fill every seat in every NFL stadium 40 times over.
○ Estimate. 272 million adults × 32% (Pew 2023) = 87 million. NFL stadiums seat about 2.2 million people in total.
The studio economy.
How big is tattooing, and where is it growing? Nobody counts studios officially, so we pieced it together from directories, registries and the analysts, and tell you which is which. The picture is a trade that has doubled in a decade across most of the West, is starting to run out of skin in Britain and France, and is still booming in Asia and southern Europe.
Studios by country
Tattoo studios listed on 1 April 2026, counted the same way in every country. China and the United States dwarf everyone, Brazil and India follow, and Britain has more studios than any other country in Europe. Directories miss home studios and private artists, so trust the order more than the exact numbers.
○ SmartScrapers directory count, 1 April 2026. Registries run higher where they exist, Italy over 6,000 businesses on Unioncamere 2022 (including piercing), the UK 3,394 on company data 2023, the Netherlands 1,658 licensed shops 2022. Teal marks the markets this page follows most closely.
People per studio

Growing and shrinking
Studio counts over the last decade in the markets that publish them. The United Kingdom doubled between 2014 and 2023 then recorded its first fall, the Netherlands doubled in 7 years, Italy quadrupled, and France went from 20 tattooists in the mid 1980s to 15,000 with its own trade body now calling the market saturated.

The market, honestly sized
The analysts put the "global tattoo market" at about USD 2.4 billion for 2025, growing 8 to 11% a year. That is less than tattoo artists earn in the United States and Britain alone, so it is really a narrow slice weighted to supplies and temporary tattoos. The real economy is several times bigger, and nobody has measured it.
◇ Fortune Business Insights, Straits Research, Expert Market Research 2025 to 2026 · IBISWorld via Research and Markets · IMARC and Fortune for removal. Scale USD 6bn. Every analyst has removal growing faster than tattooing, at 6 to 19% a year.

Where the conventions are
Tattoo conventions ever listed per country on the biggest event calendar. Per head of population France leads and Australia trails, which tells you Australians find their artists through studios and a few big expos rather than a convention circuit.

The convention that closed
The Paris Mondial du Tatouage, founded in 1999 and once the biggest in Europe, fell from 35,000 visitors in 2015 to about 15,000 in 2025 and announced its final edition for January 2026, citing cost and competition from newer, smaller conventions.
◇ Organiser statement via Sortiraparis 2025. Europe's convention calendar runs late January to March and in autumn, the opposite of the consumer search peak in July, so the trade travels in its off season.

Britons live within reach of a tattoo studio. There are more than twice as many studios as bank branches.

What we wear.
What are people actually getting, and what is next? The reasons haven't changed much in 20 years, most tattoos are about someone, but the look has changed completely. Watercolour has collapsed, fine line has grown 21 times over, and the search data shows exactly when each wave broke.
Why we get inked
Share of tattooed Americans who got at least 1 tattoo for each reason. 7 in 10 did it to honour or remember someone or something, and women more than men.
● Pew Research Center 2023, n = 8,480. Honour or remember, women 73%, men 63%.

◐ YouGov April 2025, n = 1,115, shares of all adults divided by the 24% who are tattooed. Rounded, so each could be out by a few points.
What the world is searching for
Worldwide Google search interest in 5 tattoo styles, 2016 to 2026, each year averaged from monthly data. Values are relative to the single busiest month in the set, so the chart shows the shape of demand, not volumes. Watercolour was the most searched style of 2016 and has lost almost 90% of its interest. Fine line passed it in 2021 and has not stopped.
● Google Trends, worldwide web search, pulled 8 October 2026, keywords "fine line tattoo", "watercolor tattoo", "geometric tattoo", "realism tattoo", "blackwork tattoo", monthly values averaged by calendar year, 2026 to September. Relative interest, 100 = the busiest month in the set.
Fine line, market by market

When we get inked
Searches for "tattoo" by month, averaged over 14 years. In the Northern Hemisphere demand peaks in July and bottoms out in November. Australia runs the other way, peaking in January and quietest in May, which is the first time the southern season has been shown in data. If you want a shorter wait and a calmer studio, book in the off season. That is November in the US and Britain, and May in Australia.

The price of ink.
What does a tattoo cost, here and everywhere, now and then? There is no official price index for tattooing anywhere in the world, so we built this from studio price lists, marketplaces and trade guides. 2 things stand out. Prices move in steps, not slopes. And the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive hour on earth is more than 100 to 1.
An hour of tattooing, around the world
What a typical studio charges an hour in 2025 to 2026, converted to US dollars so they sit on 1 scale, with the local currency in the label. Dubai is the most expensive place with published rates, Thailand the cheapest, with a premium in the tourist zones, and Japan is well below the West despite its reputation.

The rules.
Where is it legal, where is it still taboo, and where is it changing? Outright bans on tattooing adults have all but vanished this decade. What is left is a patchwork of age limits, placement rules, ink chemistry and social no-go zones, and the 2 big "doctors only" regimes, Japan and South Korea, have both fallen.

The mind.
What does a tattoo say about who you are? Less than almost everyone thinks. 4 decades of personality research find 1 small, real difference and a long list of things that don't hold up, and the study that tested whether people can read you from your ink found them confidently wrong.
The tattooed personality, to scale
Big Five traits of tattooed adults against everyone else, drawn as the difference in standard deviations. The grey ring is the population. The teal line is tattooed people. Only extraversion moves, by a quarter of a standard deviation, which means the 2 groups overlap by about 90%. Openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness and neuroticism show no reliable difference in any well-powered study.
● Swami et al 2012, Personality and Individual Differences, n = 540, Austria and Germany (extraversion ηp² = .02, all other traits under .01) · Carter 2016, n = 521 US students (extraversion d = 0.25). No meta-analysis exists. Older reports of lower conscientiousness or agreeableness have not replicated in the larger samples.
What actually differs
The reliable markers are motives rather than traits. Effect sizes in standard deviations, from the same studies.

Scale 0 to 0.6.
Can you read a person from their ink?
A 2025 study showed 375 tattoos to 30 raters and compared their guesses with the wearers' real personality tests. Observers agreed with each other about what each tattoo "said". They were wrong on 4 of 5 traits. The single valid cue was that unusual or "wacky" tattoos modestly predicted openness.●
● Soulliere et al 2025, Journal of Research in Personality, 274 tattooed adults.
Regret, decoded
About 1 in 5 tattooed people regret at least 1 tattoo, and it has nothing to do with how many you have. It is about how the decision was made. How much each factor raises or lowers your odds, where 1.0 means no effect, from a study of 3,033 Americans.
● Morlock and Morlock 2023, Cureus, n = 3,033, regret 18.2%. Headline regret rates, Pew 2023 24% ●, Australia 23% (McCrindle 2023) ◐, Italy 17% wanting removal (ISS 2015) ●. Actual removal stays rare, 4% in Italy, 2% in Sweden.
The age that decides it
Share who regret a tattoo, by age at which they got it. The drift to older first tattoos should push regret down over time.

○ Estimate from Morlock and Morlock 2023 (n = 3,033). Base rate 18.2%, odds ratios 0.93 per year of age from 22, 2.98 drunk or high, 2.0 hand or wrist, 2.1 head or neck, 0.68 remembrance, 3.02 peer pressure, multiplied together. A guide, not a prediction.
What the untattooed think
Among Americans without a tattoo, the impression a tattoo makes of someone.
● Pew 2023. Negative rises to 40% among over 65s. The stereotype survives only in the lab. In the real world tattooed workers earn the same and are hired as often (Human Relations 2018, n over 2,000 ●), and 924 emergency patients rated tattooed doctors identically on competence and professionalism (Emergency Medicine Journal 2018 ●).
Does it hurt, and does it help
No peer-reviewed study has measured tattoo pain by body part on a proper scale. Every pain chart on the internet is artist and client consensus, including ours in the next chapter, and ours says so.◇
The whole evidence base for the idea that tattooing "trains" the immune system. 2 small studies found immune markers dip less in people with more tattoo experience. A hypothesis, not a finding.●
The only study to follow people from before a first tattoo to after found anxiety and body dissatisfaction fell and self-esteem rose, while a 2019 survey found more self-reported diagnoses among people with 4 or more tattoos. Association in a heavily tattooed subgroup, no evidence of cause, some evidence of benefit.●

◐ YouGov. The strongest single predictor of regret in every dataset is age at tattooing.
The skin.
What is a tattoo actually doing in there, and how do you look after it? A tattoo isn't ink trapped in dead skin. It is held by living immune cells that pass it on when they die, which is why it lasts a lifetime and why it is the sun, not time, that fades it.
Why it stays
The needle deposits about 1 milligram of pigment per square centimetre into the dermis, a millimetre or 2 down. About 30% has been carried away by the body within 6 weeks.●
Dermal macrophages, the immune cells that clear foreign particles, swallow the pigment. They cannot break it down, so they hold it, and the tattoo becomes visible through the skin.●
When a pigment-laden macrophage dies, its neighbours and fresh cells from the bone marrow recapture the pigment on the spot. Capture, release, recapture, for life. It is also why lasers need many sessions.●

The healing clock
What dermatology associations say about the weeks after a tattoo.
- Days 1 to 3Redness, swelling and weeping. Keep it clean, use a water-based moisturiser. Petroleum-based products "can cause the ink to fade"●
- Week 1 to 2Peeling and itch as the surface sheds. Do not pick, do not soak●
- 2 to 4 weeksSurface healed. The acute inflammation has settled●
- 3 to 6 monthsDeep settling. The consumer rule of thumb, consistent with the biology but with no single primary source◇
- For lifeBroad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapplied every 2 hours in the sun. No sunbeds. See a dermatologist for any change in tattooed skin●

Reaction types include allergic and light-triggered dermatitis, granulomas, the Koebner response in people with psoriasis, and MRI warming from iron-oxide pigments.
Where it hurts most
No study has ever measured tattoo pain by body part on a proper scale, so this is what artists and their clients agree on, not research, and it is marked that way. The rule of thumb is simple. Thin skin over bone, and anywhere with lots of nerve endings, hurts most. Muscle and fat hurt least.
◇ Artist and client consensus, on a 1 to 5 scale where 5 is the worst. Teal marks the easiest places to start. Not research.
Easiest first tattoos
If it is your first, these are the places almost every artist will steer you towards.
- 1Outer upper arm. Muscle, little bone, and you can watch
- 1Outer forearm. Easy to heal, easy to show or hide
- 1Outer thigh. The most room for a large piece with the least pain
- 2Calf and shoulder. Still comfortable for most people
- 3Stomach and inner thigh. Fine for most, sensitive for some
- 4Hands, neck, knees, elbows, shins, sternum, head
- 5Ribs, spine, feet and ankles. The ones people brace for
◇ Consensus. What the research can say is that pain is personal, that people with more tattoos report tolerating it better, and that no body map has been tested in a study.
Fading is a sun story
The only quantified fade experiment used a red azo pigment in a mouse model. Pigment loss from the skin in each condition.
● Engel et al 2009 to 2010, mouse model, Pigment Red 22, with aromatic amines detected as breakdown products. Azo pigments make up about 60% of colourants and degrade under UV. Carbon black does not, which is why colour fades before black. No human fade table by colour exists.

The cancer question, straight
Two Scandinavian studies in 2024 and 2025 found associations between tattoos and some cancers. A 2025 meta-analysis pooling 4 studies did not confirm the lymphoma link. Both are shown, because a page that skipped this would deserve the first dermatologist's complaint. These are relative risks of rare cancers, so even a true 20 to 30% increase is a small absolute change.

Brands and ink, in 3 waves
Brand collaborations with tattoo artists or studios, counted from the streetwear and fashion press in 5 year blocks. The count leans to streetwear and misses most beauty, drinks and car campaigns before 2020, so treat the early bars as a floor.

- 2011 to 19Legitimisation. A Paris fashion house hand-customises its men's bags with a tattoo artist in 2011. A Swiss watchmaker launches a tattoo studio series in 2017 and returns to it 4 more times. A tattoo-artist-founded beauty brand sells to a luxury group in 2020●
- 2020 to 26Recurrence. The same labels return to the same studios season after season, concentrated in Japanese streetwear, with luxury watchmakers the most consistent category. A ketchup brand develops a red tattoo ink as a stunt in 2023●
- AftercareThe verified growth story. 1 US tattoo aftercare brand went from USD 3 million of projected revenue in 2020 to more than USD 25 million expected in 2024 across 1,800 Walmart and 4,100 GNC stores◇
