The house

Authentink occupies a warehouse conversion on a Surry Hills side street, a short walk from Central. Founded in 2013, it is a semi-private studio of 12 resident artists specialising in Japanese and Asian-influenced tattooing. Irezumi comes first, then fine line, black and grey and realism with roots in the East. Horisumi tattoos every day the studio is open, the house trains its own apprentices in the Japanese manner, and samurai armour stands watch over the consultation table.

The owner

Kian Forreal tattoos under the name Horisumi, bestowed on him by Horiyoshi III in 2013 after 20 years in the craft. Tattooing since 1993 and trained in tebori under Horikashi of Gifu, he is Australia's leading practitioner of hand-carved Japanese work. Outlines go in by machine, every shade and colour by hand, with sumi ground from Japanese sticks in his own colour lab. He lectures on the history of Japanese tattooing and has presented at the Art Gallery of New South Wales for Japan Supernatural, at the Japan Foundation and at the Newcastle Museum of Art.

Reputation

More than 1,000 five-star reviews across 13 years, and a Time Out profile that called the studio one of the world's most respected purveyors of Japanese ink. Waits for Horisumi's large-scale work run long, and the house gives priority to clients beginning a bodysuit with a full back.

The house

JAY-INK Academy sits on William Street, Paddington. An international resident team, with artists from Colombia, Korea and Spain among them, works to a single studio standard, and the Academy is literal. Apprentices are trained under the house method, and the room is set up for guest residencies. A second studio at Bondi Beach, the coastal flagship for fine line and micro realism, opens soon.

The owner

Jay was born in Sydney and raised in Madrid, where he began tattooing in 2017 during the early rise of fine line in Spain. Self-taught, he built a signature in micro realism shaped by Renaissance and Baroque art, classical sculpture, mythology and architecture, translating museum pieces into compositions designed around the body. His work has been featured in ELLE and Vogue, took first place for fine line and micro realism in Sydney in 2024 and again in Madrid in 2025, and has carried him through Madrid, London, Paris, Rome, New York and Miami.

Reputation

A young house with an outsized reputation for precision. The work is designed around the anatomy and built to age, an award-winning full back at the Sydney Tattoo Convention is already on the books, and the consultation process comes back to the client within two working days with the right artist and an estimate.

The house

Lighthouse began in 2010 as a communal studio in Sydney's south-east, and Broadsheet was writing about its year-long waiting lists and 30-hour pieces by 2015. Today it works across two rooms, St Peters in the inner west, a spacious industrial studio suited to large-scale work, and Surry Hills on the edge of the CBD. Resident specialists cover Japanese, traditional, realism, geometric and tribal work, every project begins with an artist-led consultation, and co-founder Nathan Puata still offers tebori on request.

The owners

Alex Rusty, tattooing since 2005, co-founded Lighthouse after working alongside Australia's leading Japanese artists and guesting in London, New York and Berlin. His large-scale Japanese work is bold and illustrative, built for flow and for longevity in the skin, and he is active in the Australian Tattooists Guild, helping shape the future of the craft here.

Ryan Ussher runs the house with him. His Japanese and neo-traditional work carries high contrast and a deliberate grit, honed across a career that began in a busy street shop and travelled through the United Kingdom, Europe and North America before he made Lighthouse his home.

Reputation

Clients wait more than a year for the owners' books and describe a process that stays consistent from first consult to finished piece. Long-term clients call it the only place in Sydney for work of any size. The house approach, structure, contrast and clarity so the work still reads in 20 years, is the basis of its standing, and Urban List and Time Out have both named it among the city's best.

The house

The Black Mark is a private studio on High Street, Northcote, five kilometres north of the CBD. There is no walk-in trade and no audience. The address is shared only once a booking is confirmed, and a client sits with an artist's whole attention. The resident team of 13 spans realism, illustrative, Japanese, traditional and blackwork, and the studio's Brew Bar, where Mick pulls the coffee himself, has become part of the ritual of a session.

The owners

Mick Squires is a Global Top 100 artist and one of the most accomplished colour realists working anywhere. Across more than 20 years, from Korpus in Melbourne to his own house, his portraits and animals have set the standard for the style in Australia and earned him a place in the invitation-only Paradise Tattoo Gathering. He teaches it too, with seminars across the United States, England, Germany, Singapore and New Zealand, and he builds the machines other tattooers work with. Read his ICONICA portrait.

Elric Gordon, his co-owner, has tattooed for more than a decade and holds multiple awards for black and grey work. A charcoal artist away from the machine, he brings the same tonal discipline to skin, and to the way the house is run.

Reputation

Clients describe a room closer to a gallery than a parlour, and a crew that works like family, from a first small piece to a long session. Tattoodo has named Mick among Australia's finest colour realists. The studio's word of mouth runs interstate and overseas, and its diary is arranged around clients who travel to sit in it.

The house

Paradox is a private studio and education hub on Dynon Road, West Melbourne. Seven resident artists work under one roof, and teaching is not an add-on. The house exists as much to pass technique on as to practise it, with a standing Events and Guest Artists programme that keeps the room in conversation with the wider craft.

The owner

Chris 'Showstoppr' Mata'afa, Samoan and New Zealand-born, arrived in Australia in 2012 and built his name in Melbourne the hard way. A first convention in 2014 yielded nothing. He returned the following year and left with five awards, and the piece that put him on the map, an old man before a burning church, is still talked about. The awards kept coming, then the invitations, then the shift from competitor to judge.
