The world in ink.

Where in the world is tattooing most a part of everyday life? The honest answer isn't the one that goes viral. On surveys you can fairly compare, North America, Australia and Scandinavia sit at the top, women have overtaken men almost everywhere, and the most tattooed age isn't 20. It's 40.

The most tattooed nations

The share of adults with at least 1 tattoo, from the best recent national survey in each country. The United States, Canada, Australia and Sweden sit together at about 1 in 3. Italy, so often called the most tattooed nation on earth, is at 1 in 8 on its own health institute's count.

A 2018 online poll of 9,054 internet users in 18 countries produced the "Italy is the most tattooed nation" headline. It measured people who were online and opted in, which runs 2 to 4 times higher than national surveys, so it is shown here for rank order only.

Women now lead

In every recent Western survey women outnumber men, and the gap is widest among the young. In Sweden it is 23 points at ages 20 to 29 and 1 point at 60 to 69. Russia is the holdout where men still lead.

Chapter 02

The studio economy.

How big is tattooing, and where is it growing? Nobody counts studios officially, so we pieced it together from directories, registries and the analysts, and tell you which is which. The picture is a trade that has doubled in a decade across most of the West, is starting to run out of skin in Britain and France, and is still booming in Asia and southern Europe.

Studios by country

Tattoo studios listed on 1 April 2026, counted the same way in every country. China and the United States dwarf everyone, Brazil and India follow, and Britain has more studios than any other country in Europe. Directories miss home studios and private artists, so trust the order more than the exact numbers.

The United Kingdom doubled between 2014 and 2023 then recorded its first fall, the Netherlands doubled in 7 years, Italy quadrupled, and France went from 20 tattooists in the mid 1980s to 15,000 with its own trade body now calling the market saturated.

The market, honestly sized

The analysts put the "global tattoo market" at about USD 2.4 billion for 2025, growing 8 to 11% a year. That is less than tattoo artists earn in the United States and Britain alone, so it is really a narrow slice weighted to supplies and temporary tattoos. The real economy is several times bigger, and nobody has measured it.

The price of ink.

What does a tattoo cost, here and everywhere, now and then? There is no official price index for tattooing anywhere in the world, so we built this from studio price lists, marketplaces and trade guides. 2 things stand out. Prices move in steps, not slopes. The rules.

Where is it legal, where is it still taboo, and where is it changing? Outright bans on tattooing adults have all but vanished this decade. What is left is a patchwork of age limits, placement rules, ink chemistry and social no-go zones, and the 2 big "doctors only" regimes, Japan and South Korea, have both fallen.

The world grid

The mind.

What does a tattoo say about who you are? Less than almost everyone thinks. 4 decades of personality research find 1 small, real difference and a long list of things that don't hold up, and the study that tested whether people can read you from your ink found them confidently wrong.

The tattooed personality, to scale

Big Five traits of tattooed adults against everyone else, drawn as the difference in standard deviations. The grey ring is the population. The teal line is tattooed people. Only extraversion moves, by a quarter of a standard deviation, which means the 2 groups overlap by about 90%. Openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness and neuroticism show no reliable difference in any well-powered study.

Extraversion +0.25 Openness Conscientiousness Agreeableness Neuroticism 0 +0.5 sd

● Swami et al 2012, Personality and Individual Differences, n = 540, Austria and Germany (extraversion ηp² = .02, all other traits under .01) · Carter 2016, n = 521 US students (extraversion d = 0.25). No meta-analysis exists. Older reports of lower conscientiousness or agreeableness have not replicated in the larger samples.

Can you read a person from their ink?

A 2025 study showed 375 tattoos to 30 raters and compared their guesses with the wearers' real personality tests. Observers agreed with each other about what each tattoo "said". They were wrong on 4 of 5 traits. The single valid cue was that unusual or "wacky" tattoos modestly predicted openness.●

● Soulliere et al 2025, Journal of Research in Personality, 274 tattooed adults.

Regret, decoded

About 1 in 5 tattooed people regret at least 1 tattoo, and it has nothing to do with how many you have. It is about how the decision was made. How much each factor raises or lowers your odds, where 1.0 means no effect, from a study of 3,033 Americans.

Not measured

No peer-reviewed study has measured tattoo pain by body part on a proper scale. Every pain chart on the internet is artist and client consensus, including ours in the next chapter, and ours says so.◇

Chapter 07

The skin.

What is a tattoo actually doing in there, and how do you look after it? A tattoo isn't ink trapped in dead skin. It is held by living immune cells that pass it on when they die, which is why it lasts a lifetime and why it is the sun, not time, that fades it.

Why it stays

1

The needle deposits about 1 milligram of pigment per square centimetre into the dermis, a millimetre or 2 down. About 30% has been carried away by the body within 6 weeks.●

2

Dermal macrophages, the immune cells that clear foreign particles, swallow the pigment. They cannot break it down, so they hold it, and the tattoo becomes visible through the skin.●

3

When a pigment-laden macrophage dies, its neighbours and fresh cells from the bone marrow recapture the pigment on the spot. Capture, release, recapture, for life. It is also why lasers need many sessions.●

● Baranska et al 2018, Journal of Experimental Medicine, via Inserm and Institut Curie · German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment on pigment load · ESRF 2017, pigment nanoparticles found in human lymph nodes.

The healing clock

What dermatology associations say about the weeks after a tattoo.

  • Days 1 to 3Redness, swelling and weeping. Keep it clean, use a water-based moisturiser. Petroleum-based products "can cause the ink to fade"●
  • Week 1 to 2Peeling and itch as the surface sheds. Do not pick, do not soak●
  • 2 to 4 weeksSurface healed. The acute inflammation has settled●
  • 3 to 6 monthsDeep settling. The consumer rule of thumb, consistent with the biology but with no single primary source◇
  • For lifeBroad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapplied every 2 hours in the sun. No sunbeds. See a dermatologist for any change in tattooed skin●

● American Academy of Dermatology · DermNet NZ. ◇ Trade consensus on deep settling.

What goes wrong, and how often

What people report, which probably overstates the minor stuff.

1 in 10

get a short-term complication in the weeks after●

1 in 20

get a reaction that lasts more than 4 months●

44%

of chronic reactions are from red ink, which is in only 36% of tattoos●

1 in 3

of those with a reaction ever see a doctor about it●

● Klügl et al 2010, Dermatology, internet survey of 3,411 tattooed Germans, 6% persistent problems · Brady et al 2015, Contact Dermatitis, about 300 New Yorkers. Reaction types include allergic and light-triggered dermatitis, granulomas, the Koebner response in people with psoriasis, and MRI warming from iron-oxide pigments.

Where it hurts most

No study has ever measured tattoo pain by body part on a proper scale, so this is what artists and their clients agree on, not research, and it is marked that way. The rule of thumb is simple. Thin skin over bone, and anywhere with lots of nerve endings, hurts most. Muscle and fat hurt least.

Head 4 Neck 4 Sternum 4 Upper arm 1 Ribs 5 Elbow 4 Stomach 3 Forearm 1 Hands 4 Spine 5, the back Outer thigh 1 Inner thigh 3 Knee 4 Shin 4 Calf 2 Feet and ankles 5

◇ Artist and client consensus, on a 1 to 5 scale where 5 is the worst. Teal marks the easiest places to start. Not research.

Easiest first tattoos

If it is your first, these are the places almost every artist will steer you towards.

  • 1Outer upper arm. Muscle, little bone, and you can watch
  • 1Outer forearm. Easy to heal, easy to show or hide
  • 1Outer thigh. The most room for a large piece with the least pain
  • 2Calf and shoulder. Still comfortable for most people
  • 3Stomach and inner thigh. Fine for most, sensitive for some
  • 4Hands, neck, knees, elbows, shins, sternum, head
  • 5Ribs, spine, feet and ankles. The ones people brace for

◇ Consensus. What the research can say is that pain is personal, that people with more tattoos report tolerating it better, and that no body map has been tested in a study.

Fading is a sun story

The only quantified fade experiment used a red azo pigment in a mouse model. Pigment loss from the skin in each condition.

● Engel et al 2009 to 2010, mouse model, Pigment Red 22, with aromatic amines detected as breakdown products. Azo pigments make up about 60% of colourants and degrade under UV. Carbon black does not, which is why colour fades before black. No human fade table by colour exists.

The cancer question, straight

Two Scandinavian studies in 2024 and 2025 found associations between tattoos and some cancers. A 2025 meta-analysis pooling 4 studies did not confirm the lymphoma link. Both are shown, because a page that skipped this would deserve the first dermatologist's complaint. These are relative risks of rare cancers, so even a true 20 to 30% increase is a small absolute change.

1.29×

What nobody knows

6 things the whole industry has never measured.

How many sleeves exist. What share of tattoos are fine line, realism or blackwork. How much a tattoo hurts on each part of the body. How many people have their pet's name on them. How many footballers, musicians or chefs are tattooed. And the real size of the global tattoo economy. If you have the data, we would love to see it. concierge@skingraphica.com

How to read the marks
